You’ll still see ads
Opting out changes how ads are chosen, not whether they appear. Non-personalized ads still use cookies for frequency capping, fraud prevention, and counting.
Privacy
One control, no account required, and it takes effect on this browser immediately.
Ads on our free pages are served by Google. To choose which ad to show, Google reads a cookie identifier and receives your IP address and the page you’re on. California law calls that “sharing,” and you can stop it.
Current status on this browser: not opted out — your information may be shared for personalized advertising.
This is stored in a cookie, so it applies to this browser on this device — including after you sign out. We keep it per browser rather than per account on purpose, so that opting out never requires signing in or proving who you are. The trade-off is that if you use another browser or another device, set it there too, or turn on Global Privacy Control, which carries across browsers and sites automatically.

Your subscription, pricing, features, and data all stay exactly the same. We don’t treat people differently for exercising a privacy right, and it would be illegal to.
To turn off ad personalization across everything Google serves, use My Ad Center . Blocking third-party cookies in your browser works too.
There’s no separate control because we don’t collect sensitive personal information — no government IDs, precise location, health data, or biometrics. Nothing to limit.
The control above covers advertising on the website only. It has no effect on email, which is managed separately — and the sponsorships in our newsletters don’t involve advertising networks at all, so there is nothing there to opt out of. We place that copy ourselves, and section 5 explains how that differs from the ads on the site.
Every marketing message has an unsubscribe link at the bottom that works immediately. Sign in to change what you receive, or email us and we’ll do it for you.
Renewal notices, password resets, security alerts, and changes to this policy aren’t marketing and can’t be switched off while your account is open. Closing your account stops them.
Paying subscribers don’t receive sponsor blocks. Everyone else gets the same ones, chosen by us rather than targeted at anybody.
Access, correction, deletion, and portability are handled by email rather than a button, because they need your account identified. Section 8 of the privacy policy explains how to make one of those requests and how long we take.
